Default Newbie needs rad fan help!!!!

Got my first GV after getting rid of my Grand Cherokee. I took the GV for a long drive to check temps because the guy who traded it in said that somethings not right with it because the fans dont kick in.

I have bridged the grey/dark green on the fan relay (under the airbox) and both fans work. The worrying thing is that the bridging wire (paper clip) got extremely hot. I would imagine the relay is shot but I dont want to replace if the heat created through the wiring causes heat because it could knacker the relay.

Any ideas would be of great use

From the 2000 FSM:

INSTALLATION
CAUTION: The relay mounting location is designed
to dissipate heat. Ensure the relay is properly
attached to prevent relay “thermal” shutdown and
relay damage, resulting in possible engine overheating.

I seem to remember reading somewhere you need to clean the relay mounting area and use a heat transfer paste between the relay and the mounting area before riveting the new one.
