Default Noise from Gearbox Area

Severe clanky rattle from gearbox area, goes when clutch is depressed, I hope it is the thrust bearing but never heard a noise as bad as this before and I used to work with commercials, also when driving and noise bounces back off a wall the sound is there, I'm hoping it isnt the box, oil was changed 6 months ago, is this a common noise??

Hi

I had a 2001 voyager 2.5CRD from new until two months ago (manual) we did 175,000 miles in it.

It had the same noise from the gearbox as you describe for pretty much as long as I can remember. Harsh kind of bearing noise with the clutch out in neutral and then quiet with the clutch pushed in...

I changed the gearbox oil a couple of times during it's lifetime it never changed the noise. Of course I can't say how bad your's is compared to mine, but it was definitely noticeable.

I do have to say that the eventual demise of the car was failure of the gearbox or diff bearings tho.. but after 175K I couldn't complain.

By the way, I've owned and rebuilt Kawasaki motorbikes for years now, they are exactly the same, clutch rumble in neutral that goes away when the clutch is in.

I guess the noise is from the primary shaft bearing or similar. I had two new clutches (complete 3 part) in my voyager and it didn't make any difference to the noise, so it's not the clutch thrust bearing.. that would make a noise when you pressed the clutch in.
