Rear reverse camera not working

Our grand voyager generation 5 has the rear parking camera fitted from the factory. It used to work fine but now it shows not image just a black secreencsnd the warning to check entire surroundings. I have had the tailgate trim off and looked for breaks in the wiring messed with the connections and had the camera unit out but no fix. Anyone come across this before or have any ideas

Had a buddy at my place a couple of weeks ago with his Grand Cherokee with a very similar issue. We were all over it and could find anything wrong. So we're assuming its the camera, though due to the replacement cost he doesn't want to risk buying a replacement and a guess.
