My cheap scanner is a Memoscan U581 CAN OBDII scanner from a well known internet auction site. The U581 is better than earlier models from the research I did. I paid £50 two years ago. Came with instructions and cables and a carry case. It has been useful and reliable for me as a DIY amateur....not sophisticated enough for professionals, but still useful.
If you live anywhere near the New Forest you are welcome to borrow it.
My Chrysler is a Grand Voyager petrol 2003 model year so it should work on yours if it works on mine. From memory the codes I have had have been P codes (the reader tells you the code and a short text for what the code means). However, if you search this forum there is a link to what the codes all mean as well.

Is there any news about the code readers? I'm thinking about the Launch easydiag, found some good feedbacks on Russian forums, but you must buy new software each year, it's more like you subscribe to software.

I am not sure which ' LAUNCH ' OBDii reader the guy used on my 2.8 CRD.............
But it did what 3 other garages could not do....
It dealt with a fuel rail code (a new fuel pump solenoid fitted brought up the MIL )
It dealt with a P code ( gearbox output speed sensor faulty - replaced and running great )
And it cleared down a couple of other bits.

Big yellow Croc, what code did you have on gearbox, if you don't mind me asking.
I have P0733 and P1790 and it's looks like input sensor. But I ordered both, just to be on the safe side.
Launch don't have to many. If that was small and yellow, then it's easydiag or easydiag plus. If it's with screen then X431. Launch have some code readers but I think they are only for P codes.

I think my big problem when it went into limp mode was P0733 OR P0732 ( I cannot find the paperwork at present ) ..........
That transpired to be the transmission output sensor (£29 genuine part ) 4 minutes to fit it.
The speedo and rev counter were all over the place .... went into 2nd gear and that was it......35mph tops........ NEARLY SCRAPPED IT ! ! ! !
Since then absolutely fine.
The fault made the MIL come on , however having replaced the sensor , after a 20 mile journey............. the MIL went out of its own accord ...no reset required.
As for the LAUNCH ..... It was a hand held device 100mm x 140mm red in colour and had a bluetooth plug with it.

- updates are not just for newer vehicles listed, eg 2016 2017 etc
- a fix for a 2005 might not be updated on the software till 2009 for example
Even the big Autels won't read Chrysler diesels and most cheap end Autel products are toys designed for novice ODB codes only.. .. Best of luck.

- be aware that at this price [unless they've come down] they are 'grey'
- all companies do this if you want updates, every one of them
- updates are not just for newer vehicles listed, eg 2016 2017 etc
- a fix for a 2005 might not be updated on the software till 2009 for example

My bad I thought a reader and diagnostic were the same thing. I guess that's why massive difference in price then
