Synthetic oil is better (if more expensive) in common petrol and diesel engines, in fact very much better if the engine is turbocharged. Synthetic does not carbonize too easily under high temperature conditions as in turbochargers. Ir was invented by the germans during WW2., mainly due to difficulties obtaining mineral. It is the only type to be used in gas turbine and jet engines due to heat and very high RPM (up to 100,000RPM).

There are two types of synthetic, hydrocracked and poly-alpha-olefin, the hydrocracked being cheaper. The makers will not tell you what type their's is. Just try finding out! There are as usual blends of synthetic with mineral, but it tells you that on the tin.
QED.
