Default 1996 Stratus ABS failure

I have a 1996 Chrysler Stratus with the 2.0l engine, and the abs system does not work. The abs light is on.

Is it possible to find out whats wrong, or do I have to go to an autorised dealer to read the codes?

You can guess, and start replacing parts ***** nilly, and who knows, you might be right and happen to replace the right part. Or you can go to someplace with the right equipment and knowledge and fix it right the first time.

Your call.

well what you do is replace fuses and relays related to the system. if that doesn't work, replace each wheel speed sensor and see if that helps, if not then replace the computer, if that doesn't help, then replace the HCU pump assembly, if that doesn work replace the wire harness, if that doesn't work, seek out a professional mechanic to solve the problem. Or just take it to ANY automotive repair facility. Even places like Midas or Firestone, goodyear, or any other shop that does mechanical/brake work. The should be cheaper than going to a dealer. if you have no confidence in anything but a dealer, then you must take it to a dealer. Or if it was me, I'd buy a used Snap-on or OTC 400 SCANNER not a code reader and diagnose it myself. There's these really cool buildings called Libraries that have excellent sources of research material and many have access to quality service manual programs such as Mitchell on demand or Shopkey5 or some other quality service manual information. An afore mentioned scanner will run under $500. Think you'll never use it again? heck no, you sound like the kind of person that is willing to try to do things yourself. now just look at ALL the posts on here were people DEMAND someone to GIVE them the answers to all their problems... where a simple scanner will answer all questions. I laugh when people get a code then ask how to fix it on the forum... if they have the code, the just get the diagnostic proceedures on how to solve the problem, but instead, they DEMAND someone tell them how to do it instead of using some effort to work thru the problem themselves. I call those people information diodes..
