dash dimmer switch

dash dimmer switch
1990 lebaron. When the drivers door is opened the dash lights come on, when the car is started the dash lights stay on, I know this normal. When I turn on the headlights or parking lights the dash lights go out. Sliding the dimmer switch has no effect. Would this be a problem with dimmer switch only? OR Thanx
