Smile voyager aircond problem

I have a 1997 chrysler voyager.
When i turn the airconditioner on it makes a terrible noise from the aircond compressor, it sounds like a bearing noise or something like that. When we turn the aircond off the noise goes away.
Does this type of noise seem to be a bearing or is there something else that it could be ?
Are these compressors a throw away item or can they be repaired?
Thanks .

have u taken a look under the hood when the noise is there?
this is something that u can find just like any other noise in the house or else where.
I would just get a reman or new compressor if that is what it ends up being.
