Exclamation 1999 300m HELP!

heres the issue. normally i hear of limp mode with transmission stuck in second gear. my problem is the transmission is skipping second gear, going from first to third, even in auto stick. probably the solenoid, but if i am wrong, what else could it be? and really, does it require a drop of the transmission to change the solenoid? and where can i find pictures of where the solenoid is located? help!!

Default i am currently in school

i am aware, and am currently in the associates in automotive technology program at blue ridge community college. but this is MY vehicle and i am quite capable of taking care of whatever the problem is, just wondering if anyone had any ideas. i know the code will read the problem, but my wife is currently driving the car and i am not with her at this time. anyways, the car is running fine now, and shifting regularly, but i havent had the chance to put my hands on it to properly diagnose yet, only going by what she is telling me thus far.
