Default 2.7L v6 vibration damper installation

I have a 2004 Chrysler Sebring convertible. I'm replacing the 2.7 L V6 with another one. My question is does anyone know if it's absolutely necessary to use the special tool to install the vibration damper? Or can you just knock it on carefully with a bronze mallet? Any help anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated.

A couple of points. Halfway through the 2004 model year, Chrysler changed the engine control system. Make absolutely sure your replacement engine is the same system as your old one. The engine computers look quite different between the two systems and the wiring harnesses is not compatible, If the harness from the new engine is not able to plug into the old computer, you have a problem.

Assuming all is good, you can get an installation tool for a fraction of what this whole job is costing you. Get the tool and do it right. You don't want to be a hammer mechanic. Check with places like AutoZone and see if they have a loaner tool available (for FREE!).

Come back and brag about your success when it's done.

One other point about buying a tool. You can consider buying a used one on eBay and selling it there when you're done. Almost free!
