A/C 1965 Newport
I am trying to help a friend with the A/C on a 65 Newport. The system mechanically seemed to be intact so we broke down all the connections and replaced the 55 year old o rings. While everything was open I used compressed air to blow all the oil residue out of the evaporator and condenser, sucked all the oil out of the compressor and filled it with PAG oil with die.
Put the vacuum pump on it for an hour plus and it held vacuum overnight. Put can pressure on it and found no leaks. Started it up turned on the A/C and no clutch. I jumpered the clutch to charge the system and the A/C works great, this thing will freeze the gonads off of a brass monkey.
Problem is that I am not at all familiar with this system and do not know how the clutch electric works. I am too d... old to be crawling around under this dash trying to trace the clutch wiring so am wondering if there is anyone out there who has a wiring diagram on the clutch circuit. I did read somewhere in my search that the compressor runs constantly and that there is some kind of internal control to regulate evaporator pressure/temperature to prevent freeze up. I have not been able to confirm that but if that is really the case I only need to find one wire that is hot when the control is on A/C. I could tap into that wire with a relay to prevent feed back and all will be good. Any help would be greatly appreciated as So Cal is going into the hot season and driving without A/C is possibly criminal.
