Default 96 Sebring ran good till battery and alternator was changed

Hello, I have the opportunity to purchase this car for 500 bucks was 1100. The reason for the price drop is after his battery light came on he had a shop replace the battery and alternator and now the car will only drive in low gear. The shop is telling him he needs a new solenoid pack, and he don't want to dump any more money into it. . I don't believe them. I do trust this person for his story. I did some research and found out that in order to change the battery the drivers side wheel and plastic shroud has to come off. So I'm thinking some wires were disturbed? There is no engine light on. A little more about the car, 6 cylinder, top goes up and down, rear window stitching is ratty, some rust, 200,000 miles, good tires, heat works, pretty much a 500 dollar car. What are your thoughts?

There are many more wires near the alternator than there are near the battery so if anything was damaged I would look around there. I don't believe anything a seller tells me. That comes from decades of buying and selling cars. Just because there's no check engine light doesn't mean there isn't something the computer has logged. If you don't see anything obviously broken then be prepared to spend some money diagnosing the problem. Even though $500 doesn't sound like much you could easily spend two or three times that amount fixing the problem which is more than the car is probably worth considering the condition. If it was me with how many hundreds of thousands of Sebring convertibles that were built I would shop around for a little later one. By the time the 2000's came out many of the early problems were fixed.
