Default AC Issue

So I am riding home from the body shop enjoying the new paint on my 2001 Sebring, and suddenly the cold air goes warm.

Experimenting, I noticed that moving the control **** from vent to defroster the cold air came back. Moving the **** back to vent the cold air continues.

Could it be a faulty control panel, or perhaps freon? We have had the auto since 2003 and as far as we know, the AC has never been worked on.

Thanks!

George

Oddly enough, it has not happened again since last week. But then I have been driving with the top down most of the time. I asked a mechanic friend and he thinks it could be either low refrigerant, or the control **** is wearing out. I am holding off taking the auto in due to lack of funds...

Hey, gorgeous car!!! (Looks just like mine!) BTW, you can easily and cheaply replace the name badges on the bumper, they stick on.

Regarding the A/C, the A/C and heater functions are actually controlled by the body computer. The ***** on the dash just tell the computer what you want, and it takes it from there, sending appropriate signals to the system. If it acts strangely occasionally, it's most likely the computer having a brain f*rt. I have two Sebrings, an 01 Convertible and an 02 sedan. On rare occasions, they will do something strange like that.

The body computer replacement is, unfortunately, an expensive proposition. You can buy oneon eBay,and you can replace it with some work, but the car won't start until the computer is reprogrammed by a dealer or someone with a diagnostic readout box. This is not a simple scan tool, but a very expensive device.

Long and short of it is, leave it alone until it really needs it.

Yes it is possible that a low refrigerant charge is responsible. A relatively inexpensive problem to check and fix. You might even try it yourself.

More likely it is the contacts in your control panel. A bit more challenging and expensive.

However! if it is your computer, you might try checking ALL of the grounds in your vehicle, especially the negative battery lead.

Bad grounds, bad performance.
