Default Trunk release button 2001 sebring

Bought a new trunk release button for my 2001 sebring. It worked off and on. But this new one now ALSO works off and on. Is there anything else in the trunk release mechanism that can be checked out/replaced? Is there something in the trunk itself?

The mechanism that releases the trunk is part of the latch in the trunk. It may need a bit of attention like lube or checking for loose or pinched wires. Like almost everything else, the circuit runs through the body computer. In a convertible, the button won't work with the top down, for obvious reasons.
