Question Map update for Nav system question

Has anyone paid the exorbitant fee to update their map data for the built-in Nav system? For the amount they are asking for a one-time update, I can buy a hand held lifetime update Garmin. Was going to attempt to negotiate a "great deal" but wanted to get some feedback to see what others have done.

Frankly, you can get your navigation right on your smart phone for free, so why bother paying anything? Another business driven out by the web (Google maps, Waz, etc.)

Default GPS Update

Are there any 3rd parties who provide map updates since Chrysler no longer provides them for the older 300's
