Default Gas Cap Message on Dash

Hello the gas cap message came on dash. I think it came on awhile back and when I turned the cap to make sure it was tight and kept driving it eventually went out. Well this time it didn't and eventually the CEL light came on. I went to dealership and bought a new cap and put it on and reset the CEL and the dash trip odometer with hopes of clearing the Gas Cap message and it all went out. I drove for awhile and the Gas Cap message came back on and eventually the CEL again. I checked the codes and it said a Evap Leak (forgot the code number). Any ideas where I should start looking? I made an appointment for this week with dealership but hoping it could be something simple I can take care of.

If you are getting a P0456 and/or "Gas Cap" light, replace the ESIM (EVAP Leak Detect Switch). It mounts to the charcoal canister under the drivers side along the frame between the front and rear doors. You do not have to replace the canister. You can get the ESIM by itself now. I had the same issue and just replaced the ESIM. A simple 5 minute job. Problem solved.

Simply crawl under the truck, disconnect the electrical connection from ESIM, pull off the hose, push the tab on the ESIM and twist to unlock and remove.

ESIM - 4861959AA
Seal - 52129436AA

Both parts cost me $35.51 from my local dealer back in 2015

Thanks for the suggestions!
I watched YouTube videos and they had several different causes. Cracked lines, cracked plastic fittings or the cannister itself. They also show there is a leak detection pump that is inside of the white fitting on the canister that goes out or case cracks. I believe that is the part (#5) that you are talking about. I thought that was the culprit.

I pulled it into my buddy's garage and we looked under and all lines looked good. There is a big black plastic vent fitting on a wide black hose behind the fender near the fuel filler tube that had a broken plastic wrap tie that held it up. My buddy believes that it moving and falling downward and possible sucking in water (raining here) could have caused it. He secured it with a new plastic tie wrap.

I also saw on YouTube that some clean the fuel filler outlet with solvent to remove scum that can inhibit the gasket in the gas cap from sealing on the outlet. So I took carb cleaner and a rag and cleaned that. I reset the CEL light and the Gas Cap message and have driven 60 miles thus far with several engine shut down and starting and no Gas Cap light yet. I made an appointment for the morning so if I can put on 75+ miles I will cancel the service visit.

I will see and keep y'all updated!
