Default 2007 key not working

Does anyone know why my wifes key quit working last night? no buttons work, the key wont unlock the door manually, nothing... My wife has the car out of town, and she is stuck now, at her parents house (sometimes a good thing) but I'm ready for her to come home and she cant. Could it be a battery in the key? I cant see how that would kill the mechanical unlock, but I told her to go to radio shack and get a new one. I'll keep posted as to what I find. Any input would help...

is it the right vehicle?? hehe ;-) seriously though, my wife tried to get into an identical vehicle that had parked in a row near where she parked. took her a minute before she realized she was trying to get into the wrong car.
