Question odometer question for the experts

hello ev1, i have a 2004 chrysler pacifica awd with about 52000 miles on it.last summer my car got flooded from a severe storm we had but everything still worked just fine and it runs perfect.the only thing that started acting up was my odometer.it started giving off weird odometer readings and lights were going on and off .i took it to an electrical shop but everything checked out fine.there were no electrical problems they could find but they did say they think it was equippment malfunction in the odometer it self.i was going to go to a salvage yard and buy a replacement odometer but a friend of mine at work told me its not the odometer at all but some kind of brain that controls the odometer mileage and other functions. i dont remeber the name of what he thought it was called but i wanted to know if this is true.and if so what is the name of the part.and can i replace it myself without having to take it to the dealer.any advice would be helpful.thanks ev1 and be safe.
