New Member/Tips On Fixing PT Stalling Issues
New member here.
I recently purchased a used 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser, Blue, with 142,000 miles on it. Shortly after buying the car, it began stalling while driving it. Just before it stalled, all the lights on the dash would light up, then shortly after that it would lose power and coast to a stop. You could turn the key off and then restart the car. The problem was "intermittent" but a real pain to deal with. I had the car checked by a Chrysler Technician with a Chrysler DRB Scanner and initially there were no codes. That same Technician "reflashed" the ECM but that did not solve the problem. I read everything I could online about this problem and found that it could be many things including; the ECM, the TIPM, the IAC sensor, a dirty throttle body and the cam sensor. I cleaned the throttle body, replaced the IAC sensor and also the cam sensor but the car was still stalling. About two months ago I was in Green Bay, Wis. and a friend of mine referred me to a Technician at a small shop on the west side of Green Bay by the name of "DeJardin Auto and Truck." The owner there is Rob DeJardin and he was familiar with the issues on the PT Cruisers. He took the car in and found a defective ignition along with a bad ignition switch. The key was very loose in the ignition and when Rob "wiggled" the key in the ignition the dash lights would come on and shortly thereafter the car would stall just like before. He said the prior owner probably had a large set of keys and this weight damages the ignition and ignition switch, After both those parts were replaced the PROBLEM OF STALLING WAS FIXED!
I wrote all of this to help any other PT Cruiser Owners that may experience this issue/problem. It is a darn frustrating problem and I want to sincerely thank Rob for his knowledge and persistence to fix my car! I hope this will help other members here.
