All other gears are nice and smooth but its a struggle engage 1st when pulling away from traffic loghts and such. What could be causing this?

My cars had this issue for a while now, so either live with it or look into clutch and its operating mechanism.

Its a Bu**er. Its a Bu**er... went to South Shields today from Ae and if you know South Shields, from the A1 its roundabout after roundabout after roundabout. So this first gear engagement is a pain. And what with the works on the A1 near metro centre, road was nearly a parking lot and it wasn't even the busy time. Was glad to get back home to trees, fields, sheep, cows and very few traffic lights.

Well I didn't say it's not working just what there is a problem with the clutch hub. It's a normal condition after 150000km or 5 - 7 years what ever come first a clutch is a service part like brake pads. (see my clutch pic. in album )

The hub is warp (broke springs) and there is not enough play between hub & pressure plate to disengage 100%.
