Default 2003 Voyager wont crank!

G'day all from Sunny Australia,
So we've had our Voyager for around a year now and love it!
..until 2 weeks ago!

My wife was driving and the car just cut out.

On the side of the road for a day until I could tow it back home.

After reading heaps of forums and learning of Merlin's legendary status, I thought I'd post my particular issue here.

So, I turn the key to a "slight" sound of what i'm guessing is the front fan.

the lights all work on the dash, and a little red light I haven't noticed before is on solid.

the lights on the heater controls and blanked out until you "play" with any of the buttons and then the heater/cooler turns on, Until you turn the key off and on again!

So I've pulled out the heater control panel, re soldered all those pins ... including pin 21.
Put it all back in, and hey presto she started...but only for about 5mins!!!!
So now I'm back to square one!
Would you be thinking to replace the heater control unit? Or could it be something else?
For me to take the car to the nearest dealer...$$$$ It's about 70kms away!
As Christmas is approaching and my wife and I have 5 kids!!! We'd love to be able to do something before the holidays...Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks guys

Matt

So an update....

I've bought a "new" (second hand) center console unit complete with a heater controller...
and alas not a bit of difference!!!! Grrrr
So I've just undone the battery to see if I need to reset something .... just clutching at straws! Will leave it for a few hours, reconnect and see?

Just to let you all know...the console unit including the heater control unit and the rear wiper switches and the heated seat switches was $380! And 1 Aussie Dollar = 1 US Dollar!
Some of you guys should come over and run a business here!

Back to basics I suppose:
1. Does the starter turn the engine over, or do you just get the click... or nothing?
2. If the starter does not turn then try jumping the contacts on the starter with a screw driver and see if it kicks in.
