Default 2008 T&C GASCAP issue

Hey guys,

About 10 days ago, the service engine light appeared on our dash. Stayed lit for about 3 or 4 days then it went out. Haven't had it read yet. Today, while driving, I happened to glance at the odometer briefly and inside if the mileage, saw the word "GASCAP" where the numbers usually are. I pressed the trip odometer button and the word went away and hasn't returned. Could the service light and this be related? Is the odometer a place where vehicle messages can appear like this without prompting? Any info would be helpful as this is new to me. Thanks.

Yes, that is where certain messages will appear(in place of odometer reading). If you were to turn the ignition key from off to the run(not starter engage) three times, leaving it in the run position on the third time most of the basic DTC codes(Pxxxx) will display there also, to us long time mopar owners we call this the KEY DANCE.
Always make sure the cap clicks a couple times when done fueling up, they are rather touchy about that. IF that doesn't take care of it, then you probably have a small EVAP system leak.

On the 5th Gen vans you do not need to go to the off position to perform the key dance, you can use the following sequence:

acc, on, acc, on, acc, on.

Yes, agreed! But as I drive older MOPARS am used to describing it by the original way, BOTH will work.
