Default Another cold start problem thread...

As many may know by now my 2002 2.5 CRD has become a notoriously bad starter when cold.
I reacted to many threads about this problem but I wanted to start a new fresh thread where symptoms and already performed actions are properly listed, to provide information to others with the same cold start problem and maybe, eventually, find a solution for my car.

Symptoms:
  • (very) Bad start with cold engine up to 15 degrees Celsius environment, extremely bad start when freezing.
  • Slow start with "cold" engine even on a hot summer days
  • Engine runs/accelerates perfectly well when finally started with no power loss
  • Engine idles perfect, no stalling.
  • Engine starts immediately when a whiff brake-cleaner is sprayed into air filter
  • Engine starts immediately whole day long.. until it is parked for > 10 hours or something
  • No error codes on keydance
  • My mechanic suspects low fuel pressure during start although no leaks have been found
  • Good milage
Actions so far
  • New powerfull high CCA battery
  • New glow plugs
  • New glow plug relay
  • New fuel lift pump
  • New fuel filter (in lift pump)
  • New cam shaft sensor
  • New fuel pressure relief valve
  • Several runs with injector cleaner in tank
so... I threw some money at the engine by replacing relatively cheap parts but I suppose next step would be to find an expensive specialized CRD mechanic with the proper gear to check the HP rail and/or the injectors..
Unless someone could suggest another relatively cheap part I could replace before entering the expensive road.

My latest thoughts on the subject:
Since it probably is a low pressure and lift pump. filter, relief valve and such are good now, could it be loosing pressure during parking through leaking seals of the injectors or something?

Well I finally did it.
Hallelujah, Eureka and Joy!

My cold start problem is finally completely solved.
Starting in the morning became so bad I didn't even attempt to start without using starterpilot on the airfilter first.

I found a diesel specialist who agreed to check my injectors for a small fee and he quickly discovered 1 injector with a "return leak"
He tried to remove the injector but it was firmly stuck so he disassembled the upper part of the injector while it stayed in the engine head..
He found a small copper ring inside the injector which was broken!
After replacing that small copper ring the car started in one turn of the key ....
Next morning (-2 degrees Celsius) the car started again immediately after 3 seconds of glowing.. Now 2 weeks further, car starts every day cold or warm like a charm..

It was one little copper ring in one injector causing me a headache all that time ... Repair cost me €200,- at the diesel specialist.

One happy camper

Especially the fact that its possible (for a CRD specialist) to repair the upperpart of an injector while staying in the enginehead will be beneficial for many methinks.

Good to hear , final some look at the injectors actualy the injectors is a wear part like sparkplugs and if taken care of "pulling them out and ad a new copper washer and some copper grease " Yes I know many said no copper grease in an aluminum head but who cares it will last 20 years with out problems .
it's easy to pull it when something goes wrong . Workshop offen forget to soften the washer with heat you will soon get blow by and injector is stuck again.

Thanks for the info came here with the same problem there is a guy 20 miles away from me in Chesterfield who had the correct pullers for the Chrysler. So I ill be taking a trip to see him. plus at the minute fuel consumption is not at its best so I can kill two birds with one stone

Thanks Vmaxxer
