Default Brake lights staying on with side lights.

Hi all, I 'vegot a problem with my brake lights . They work ok when the lights are not on, but when the lights are turned on the brake lights come on and stay on till the lights are turned off . Has anyone else had this problem.

1st. check I would make is to ensure there isn't an internal short in one of the stop-tail lamps between side light filament and stop light filament. A quick and easy test.
