Cold Starting Problems
Thanks for the quick answer,
still need guidance. I was talking about the fuse "center" next to the battery, are there fuses and relays somewhere else in the car? Where is this front panel located?
Edit: Duh, linquistic problem, you prolly mean inside the car, under the dash on driver side?

Ok that rules out my first guess of temp sensor. I will get the manual out Monday and look up the glow plug wiring and hopefully I will get one in next week so I can refresh my memory. Going by the 2000 manual (as that’s all can get at home) you have 2 glow plug relays feeding plugs 1and 2 the other 3and 4. have you found and check them? Do they click? Are you not getting power to any of the glow plugs? There is a fuseable link between the relays and the battery so possible this is blown so you need to see if you are getting power to the relays as if the glow plug light is working correctly it’s a good change the ECM is switching on the glow plug relays correctly.
Hard to test the relay clikcing sound by myself, but I cant hear a relay click in neither case- ign on and glow plug warning light off.
Im looking at the wiring diagram for the 1998 Diesel FUEL/IGN SYSTEM. It truly seems that there is a fusible link between the battery and the Glow Plug relay (Fuel Heater relay?). The Fuel Heater relay heats the crank case and the Fuel, all 4 glow plugs behind one relay. The other relay; Diesel Power relay controls the EGR solenoid.
Figured that if the Diesel power relay is taken out, the glow plug light is not coming on at all, so both the relays are linked. Im not so good with wiring diagrams...
So what could this fusible link look like? Would it be located near the engine or battery/pcm? Im betting also that my problem hides somewhere between the battery and the relay.
Latest developement on GV 1997 2.5 TD:
With the ign on, I refitted the both relays in to the pcm, and could hear /see (took the cap off from the relays) them click and make contact. I took them off and put back on several times, then started the car.
Could it be, that the relays aren't working properly and malfunction at times? I really hope so because the next solution to this problem seems something bigger and way over my head.
Its fricking -15 degrees celsius outside here in Finland, its refreshing to do some work on the car...
Out to get some new relays, will be reporting the results.

Hi
The glow plug relay is not in the PDC and it's not the fuel heater relay is there another relay next to the PDC? looked up the wire daigram for the 97 and there is only 1 relay to power all 4 plugs so not like the 2000 year model with 2.

Ok,
there are multiple relays next to the fuse box (=PDC?). I changed the Fuel heater relay and Diesel power relay to new ones just in case.
I dont know what is going on but I think that the Diesel Power relay has something to do with the actual Glow Plug relay. When ignition is on and the Diesel Power relay is taken out and refitted, I hear some other relay click, that must be the Glow plug relay. By this procedure Ive been able to start the car. Now I have to locate the Glow Plug relay and change that also and see what happens. Any ideas on the fusible link, its location and looks?

hi Merlin,
Im back again! Anyhow my problems continue and i have come full circle back to the glow plugs. I have read with interest the other contributers problems and i am hopefully a little wiser than i was a month or two ago!
Is it possible to observe the tip of the glow plug get hot when it is out of situ?
I removed number 2 and 4 plug today and put my fluke meter into the plug on each whilst touching down to earth.(while wife turned theignition to stimulate the circuit)I didnt see a voltage. Addtionally, i placed the plug in the holder and expected to see the tip light up - It didnt. It would appear the circuit as far as i can see is dead. You discussed the relay that controls the plugs earlier in the thread, can you confirm which relay it is on the bulk head - There are three black relays with red tabs and a silver relay to the right of them.
Steve

Will try and confirm with one if I have one at work tomorrow but if you look at the wires should have 2 thick wires red/white and brown/orange and 2 thinner brown/white and dark brown/white. Will hopefully have one in tomorrow to confirm just in case the wire diagram is incorrect.
