Default Engine warning light

My engine management warning light has just come on.
"the orange one shaped like engine"

Just driving along and it came on.
Still several thousand miles off a service, temp gauge normal.
Seems to still drive ok, no noticable difference from before it came on.

Is there anyway to determine what the problem is without plugging it in to a diagnostic machine.

UK spec 2004 2.8CRD diesel auto

MOT is in 1 week and the new MOT regs apply where there musn't be any warning lights shown on the dash.

(If I didn't have bad luck, I'd have no luck!)

you can try checking the codes on the dash,
turn the key in ignition forwards and backwards 3 times and any codes will be displayed, if there arent any you will just see "----"
If you get any codes just google them and you will get idea of where to start.

Went out and tried that.

Couldn't get anything to display and by that I mean I didn't appear to run a diagnostic. It was as if I was just turning the ignition on and off, there wasn't even a "---"
Does the display come up on the dash or on the overhead display?

Ok after several goes it's the P1685 code.
There are a few threads regarding this so I'll have a read up.

Thanks.

Interesting!
Where in the dash i could see the codes? In the odo or in the gears display.
I tried about 20 times to turn on and off, but only appears the kms on the left display and the gears in the right....

In the odo display.
Turn the key, (but dont start the car), and the back x3 (and then forward again), very fast

As if by magic the fairies came and fixed it.
After being on for a few days, it just went off.

Don't know if this is good or not.
Hopefully it's fixed and not a broken wire or intermittant fault.

P1685 - The SKIM (Smart Key Immobilizer Module) has received an invalid key

If it happens again you may need a new battery in your key fob.

When the light was on, I tried the other key but it didn't go off.
