Front clunk - on steering
Hi all,
This one has been the case for a while and thinking I should get this resolved before it becomes a bigger problem.
I'm getting a clunk from the driver (RHD) side of my GV 2004/5 diesel edition, but the clunk isn't when I hit a pothole, speed bump or similar (So discounts sway bars, etc I believe) it is when I turn the steering wheel.
The clunk is quite a reverberating noise so initially difficult to track down (it almost echo's through the whole chassis) but is definitely coming from driver side front. And on each turn of the wheel I get a clunk, so if I went full lock either direction I'd say it clunked 3 or 4 times approx.
My thinking is it's the top bearing on it's way out and jamming/sticking (causing tension in the spring), would that be logical?
Does anyone have any steps on tackling it as some have said need spring compressor and some say you don't need it on these?
Thanks in advance for any pointers or ways of checking this out before I pull the whole thing apart!

Your Logic seems Logical. Test your theory by holding spring and getting someone to turn steering wheel. Look for a jerk coming through the spring. Its a case of having strut loaded so put something slippery under the tyre.

That sounds like it could be the issues but I'd also take to close look at the springs. I changed a set last year and a friends MK1 Escort Mexico clone which had similar sounding issues. What had happened was one spring has broken right in the struts seat and as he turned the steering the broken edge would snag then pop, snag then pop. Although it was worse in one ditrection
