I have a 2006 2.8 CRD, she occasionally will not crank over at all..I hear a few clicks when the key is turned, then when I attempt to crank it over...nothing happens, except the radio goes dim...
The battery is in first class condition...
I have seen some info on you tube relating to the contacts in the starter motor..any help or guidance would be appreciated.
I intend to put it in to a local (non Chrysler dealer) but would like a few pointers if anyone else has suffered that same....

Make sure the battery contacts are tight and perhaps put a bit of vaseline on them.
The clicks and dim radio would indicate that the starter is not getting enough voltage to spin the engine. Though that kind of fault usually doesn't clear itself, it will need the battery charged or a high resistance connection tightened/cleaned before you can get it to crank.

I take it that you try and start and it wont start then in a couple of minutes it will start without you doing anything?

I would not assume the battery [regardless of a quick condition test] is "in first class condition..." Before spending any money take care of the jobs you can take care of yourself. Fully trickle charge the battery and try to start the car, what happens ?.

Battery to relay to solonoid in that order. Often its the solonoid or its associated soft copper bolts which may be slack, welded or burned. A click is usually the solonoid. A long brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr series of continuous rapid clicks is usually the starter motor.

Thanks for the advice, the single yellow lead to the solenoid appears to be the problem, once wiggled car starts...I just cannot get it to come off so that I can clean the terminal, need to be the size of Yoda to get to it...is there an easy way to plip off this connector?

 

You're going to have to find a way of getting it off somehow. When cleaned to bright metal with a file, some grease will stop further corrosion.
Your solution needs to be put in the "classic faults" file here.

Best way is to take off the undertray so you can get at the terminal to pull it off. Pull off the other connectors (fuel heater and water sensor?), then you have enough slack cable to work on cleaning the connector from above. You also need to clean the connector on the starter solenoid, which is best done from underneath.
