Default keys ?

Hi Guys / Girls
My 55 plate 2.8td threw a code P1685 witch is an dodgy key. So I tried the spare key and all seamed good until today. it cut out at low revs.(idle)
so the two keys now seam to throw a wobbly and the code P1685. Can it be the code reader or something.
Thanks
Bee

Could it be a worn lock? Very high mileage?
A good "wiggle" with the key has been advised here before to help diagnose.
