Default Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL)

On my 2013 2.8 TDI, the Malfunction Indicator Light has come on a couple of times but then gone off again after a day or two. It came on two days ago and after driving 350 miles today, it is still on.
The drivers handbook states that certain conditions, such as a loose gas cap, poor fuel quality etc can cause this and that the vehicle should be serviced if the light stays on through several driving cycles.
The car was last serviced 12 months ago but has only covered about 800 miles since that time.
Does anybody know anything about this issue?
