Default Minivan tranny problems

First time poster here. I hope this is the place to find out what I need. I was offered a fairly clean 1995 Voyager van with 79,000 miles. The owner, a friend, said the tranny occasionally downshifts in around town driving. Says the problem doesn't happen with highway driveng. He had it looked by the shop and they said it wasn't the tranny but maybe the computer or electronics. The consumer affairs says that bad trannys are common on Chrysler minivans. Any way to tell for sure before I buy. A new tranny is $2000+ and the van is only $1200. Thanks

Default RE: Minivan tranny problems

unfortuantly the only way to tell is to bring it to an expert (good dealer with a good tranny guy)
i know the 1996 - 2000 ns(ns= minivans) had problems tossing the dif pins staright throught the cases(my 96 did that messy) but you may be lucky maybe its only a sesnor or perhaps a good trans flush might fix it but like i said without a good tranny guy who knows? If you catch it before it blows it might be rebuildable but like i said good tranny guy.
sorry i could not be more help but i am not a good tranny guy i am a parts guru
