Personally I didn't risk it. When my local motor factors showed me the equivilent 'normal battery' and it was twice the size.
I bought my Optima battery from 'griffin-batteries' on ebay. Lowest price I found and awsome service. (Next day delivery)
Good luck. (I'm in the UK too)

Have posted the last message, I'd read this thread and consider the modified battery tray route.

Default Lead-acid replacement for Red Top gel battery

Hi
Just bought a 2007 GV 2.8 Executive from a local main dealer. It's got an Exide Excel EB741 74AH 680A lead acid battery fitted. It's a perfect fit and seems fine. The R/top has high cranking power (800A) but low capacity (50AH) and give the alternator a hard time keeping it fully charged. I bought a new 2001 GV 2.5 CRD LIMITED and the battery didnt last 12 months.
Hope this helps. John.
