Default Shift Problem

My friend has a problem with his 03. When driving it will suddenly seem to shift into neutral. The tach revs up and the speedometer, drops then it returns to normal. Sometimes it will do it once in a while other times it does it a lot. It not only startles you but jerks our backs hard. Any ideas? Thanks.

No codes for the trans, just an airbag light that has always been on.

Can you elaborate on the speedo drop? If it's just decreasing as it normally should then disregard this. If it's droping 20-30 MPH or more in a second then you may have a fault in the output speed sensor circuit or the sensor itself. It is the signal source for the speedo and plays a big part in shift scheduling.
