Hi there guys, Grand Voyager, 2.5 CRD 2003 LTD.
This Tinkling noise from engine has been there since I got car last year but its getting more noticeable. I thought it was exhaust resonance but I'm beginning to think it needs fixed.
Cambelt kit was fitted early this year and made no difference.
Aircon seems to be working with cold air.
Only thing I can come up with is the Clutch on the Aircon Compressor.
Any one out there had this same fault or know the answer.

I can only suggest you use the old mechanic's trick of a long screwdriver, business end to the suspected part, other end to your ear. In the old days of twin carburetors, mechanics would use a stereo stethoscope to listen to the air rushing into each carb., with air cleaner off of course. Then they could balance them as to idle and volume.
But many times, these irritating squeaks rattles and groans seem almost impossible to find.

p.s. One of the best substances to alleviate squeaks is silicon oil. It doesn't attack plastic as mineral based ones can sometimes.

 

- belt tensioners are always a good bet for 'tinkling'

 

Ah well the tinkling sound will just need to go on....Have put in thousands of miles with this noise so it can't be serious.

About 12 months ago I had the tinkling/jingling noise when idling after start up and switching the air con on. This went on for a while until it stopped together with the air con. The a/c clutch had fell off and was resting against the chassis rail (its a tight fit). Drove 150 miles home like that with the odd scraping noise on corners and my heart in my mouth! Its a common problem on any motor with A/C, the clutch bolt or nut comes loose and the clutch falls off. Local garage fitted re-con compressor unit resulting £700 bill.

P.S Thought I heard it again the other day and nearly crapped myself as the warranty is out. But all is OK at the moment. Now I'm getting paranoid

Just remembered Google air con clutch faults its all there.

 

Hi Portland, that's what I was expecting to hear, read about this noise somewhere on another car and that's what they found.
My Aircon seems to be working at mo, well it has been for thousands of miles with this noise so I'll leave it meantime...well might have a look..

Just going over the noises in peoples engine bays and the words Decouplier Pulley arising as the answer. Would my Grand Voyager 2003 2.5 CRD Engine use this Alternater as well, as the results were for V6 petrol versions.

Yes well QinteQ that's how the decouplier works and why its fitted. Think the old system of just tensioning the Idler would have did the job that its done all these years on other cars. Anyway the ford engine vid was more informative and the gates one even better. We learn something every day on here.
Only other answer outstanding for my noise is the Air-con clutch but system is still working yet.
So lets try an Alternator I-Spy on E-Bay at moment.
