Default 2006 Chrysler 300 Touring Ignition Switch Question

I have a 2006 Chrysler 300 Touring. I can turn off ignition while the car is in gear and remove the key. (Car is not moving) To me this is a safety hazmat at best. I am wondering if the ignition lock cylinder is defective to allow this to happen or if it is just a design flaw.

Thanks for the quick reply and I do appreciate the assistance. So it would not be the ignition switch assembly that the key cylinder goes into. Does this have anything to do with the Shift Lock cable. Just seems odd that I can turn the car off and into the locked position while the shifter is in the Drive position. I figured that the I would not be able to remove the key if it was left in gear.

I should also mention that once it is in Park mode it will not move out of position until I turn the key out of lock mode. My issue is more why I can remove my key while it is in drive mode and shouldn't that only be able to happen when it is in the park position. Thanks

Thanks for the reply. The issue is that I do not believe that I should be able to turn the key into the locked position and remove it while car is still in gear. My understand is that the key should only come out once the shifter has been put into park.

So I am trying to figure out what it is that I need to repair in order to correct this problem. I have heard that maybe it is in the Key Cylinder or maybe a part that is on the Shifter. I do know after looking at the ignition switch assembly that there a something that is attached between the ignition assembly and the shifter itself. Again I appreciate any help with this problem.
