It appears something may have crawled into my vent system and died. What's the best way to investigate for such a thing?

 

Try pouring a cupful of bleach into the cowl vent in front of the windshield and letting it sit overnight. It could be just some leaves and/or organic debris that has fallen down in there. There are commercial kits you can buy to get at mildew growth in there.
