Default 2001 300M - Transmission

I have a relatively easy question for those with experience. Will the axle stubs turn (in drive or reverse) if the half axles are not installed?

I just replaced a failed transmission with one I got at the bone yard. The condition of the bone yard trans is of course unknown. Got everything put back together but wanted to see the stub axles spin prior to putting on the half shafts since they are such a pain in the a** to get off without damage. The stubs are not spinning and I'm not sure if this means the trans is no good or if I need to install the half axles to find out.

Thanks for any advice on this.

I'm probably using the wrong term. The splined stubs sticking out each side of the transaxle, where the half axle tripods slip over.
