Default 2007 Sebring - Cold Start Problems

Hello everyone! This is my first post, I hope you can help me. Since couple of days I'm having problems starting my 2.4L Sebring, it's very unstable so I have to accelerate a bit to get normalized at ralenti and also throws some white smoke, not much, but before it didn't.

I've been told to turn the key to the ON/RUN position (but not to start) and then get back to the OFF position, and then again turn to the ON/RUN position a couple or more times and then start it, and actually it worked a lot, doing this the start is so much better, do you know why doing this procedure helps on the start?
