04 pac. tire pressure thing, again.
Greetings. My name is Eric. I have a customer who just bought a 04 Pac and first thing on the list was new tires. Everything else is fine and it is a nice rig that they are happy with.
Problem is they are getting a signal that tire pressure is high and we have not been able to reset. Checked the tire pressure and all is well. Currently set at 40 psi.
Looked thru previous posts and found out that I should check the spare. Havent done that yet but will.
Also learned from here that I need a magnet to reset the sensors? Is there a correct sequence of events to do this? Certain buttons to press for a certain time and then start with lf, then rf, then rr, then lr ? Key on or off ? Engine running or not ?
Thanks.
Eric

40 PSI is kinda high. I can not remember what the upper threshold is for the high psi, but it is near 40. Try loweing all the tires down to the rating on the door sill, which I think is 30, and see if it goes away.
There are two TPMS systems used on 04 Pac's. You need the build date or VIN to know which one the car has. The early system is synced by a button sequence and a magnet/calibration tool. The latter system is synced by driving.
Since you are getting a HIGH reading on the EVIC I would suspect that it is not a syncing issue but a sensor that is reading high pressure or thinks it is reading high pressure. If it was a sensor that was not synced you would get a 'SERVICE TIRE SYSTEM SOON' message.
There are $500-$600 TPMS tools that can read the sensors individually and tell you what they are seeing. It seems that it may be time for your shop to invest in one.

2004 Pac. Right after new tires were put on the DIC said that there was a tire pressure too high. Yes, one was and was 40 psi. Made sure all were set at 35 psi and all was well until some of the magnets went bad. Don't understand why you want 40 psi ? Log on and search for some good info and procedure on how to retrain the sensors and other related info. PLEASE report back later so we know if whatever we wrote was worth doing at all to help someone else. *BW*
Thanks for the advice folks.
The tire pressure written on the new tires is 50 lbs max. I called the customer and suggested the magnet trick and to lower the tire pressure. Haven't heard back yet, altho with the holiday and all, that's not unusual. He expressed concern about the warranty on the tires and is going to ask the tire shop about running them low.
Thanks for the tip, but, no chance that I am going to buy any electronic tooling. Most of my people drive stuff that is much older. I have an arrangement with a big shop that allows discounted work in that area. Even if I had the tooling, I don't have the savvy to use it as well as the guys at Horizon Auto. Most of the time, I can muddle thru it, but those guys are AWESOME in that field.
However it turns out, I will post what I learn for whoever comes along after me. I cant be the only person to walk this road. Sharing the results is a good way for me to repay you all for your kindness and advice.
Thanks folks.

Just an update.
We lowered all tires to 20 lbs and the light stayed on. The magnet trick did no good either. Forgot to get tire brand, sorry. I will next time I see him. Turns out the check engine lite is now on and there are a couple other minor things. Soon, its going to the dealership.
Will let you all know what happening then.
I havent forgot you.
