Angry Electrical and Brake problems

We have 2001 Chrysler Voyager. There are two problems. Took it to a mechanic and he could not diagnose the observations.

1. When car is cruising along, the fuel gauge seems to be giving an accurate read. Brakes are applied, e.g. at the stop light. Fuel gauge goes to empty and gradually comes back on.

2. With airconditioning on the car seemed to over heat - temp gauge went ot red zone. We put the airconditioner and other accessories off, the car temp gauge became normal.

We are not sure if these 2 are related. Mechanic did not have a clue, and I will probably need to take it to a dealer, but I wanted to be better informed. If this is something I can handle that would be great.

Thanks
aks
