Default preventive maintenance questions

02 town and country lxi 122,000 miles.

at what mileage should the water pump and alternator be replaced?

i am going to take this car on a 5,000mi trip in september.
the tranny filter has been replaced.
ps fluid changed and screen checked recently.
new plugs last month.
heater hoses get replaced next week.

anything else i need to pm?

i plan on keeping this car a long time and don't want to have problems that can be avoided by doing a little pm work.

this is the most trouble free car i have ever owned and i am trying to keep it that way.

thanks
mike

You didn't mention anything about changing the engine oil and filter. Probably THE most important item.

Alot of people cover 5000 miles in 3 months of normal driving.

Water pumps and alternators are items that often last the life of the car, so I wouldn't replace them as preventative maintainance. Especially as they are not cheap items (an alternator alone must be over $200)

If I were going on a 5000 mile trip, the only thing i'd consider doing is changing the belts in the engine (alternator, power steering etc) but only if they have not been replaced in the last couple of years.

I want to thank everyone for responding to my questions.

After a career of over 45 years as a professional motor vehicle mechanic i have seen and learned a lot.

Every part has a finite life. different applications for the same part can make a large difference in the life of that part.

I am pleased to hear that apparently i own a car that is pretty trouble free.

I have decided to replace my alternator, water pump, ac clutch, serpentine belt, belt idlers, and coolant hoses.
In my experience these are all relatively inexpensive items that have a pretty good chance of failing and leaving me stranded with 122,000 miles on the car.

I am spending the money and doing the work for peace of mind and an honest belief that in the long run this will save me money, time, aggravation, and possibly an overheated engine.

Thanks again
Mike

?????? After 45 years, you should Know better than to ask a question like this........Stuff happens....and Brand new parts have been known to come out of the box just as defective as the ones you are replacing.....

I did notice in all the fanfare, that you neglected to mention replacing the fuel pump... WHY???.
