Default starting problem

Hi all
Wondering if someone can offer some advice or info here. I have a 2006 grand voyager LX 2.8 crd uk model. I have been experiencing starting problems for a while, from cold it is taking up to 10 seconds of cranking before it starts, if restarting immediately there is no problem, however when the engine has warmed up and is left for a few minutes, when I try to start it, it attempts to fire then just continues to crank over, this needs to be attempted several times before it fires into life. (sometimes it seems to start sooner if left for a minute between attempts. It runs fine once started, and the battery is new. I have done a back leakage test on the injectors, they were good, also the glow plugs are functioning ok. I then performed a back leakage test on the pressure relief valve on the rail, it passed 105 ml of diesel in one minute,(on tick over) I understand that this should not pass diesel under normal circumstances and that this can lead to starting issues. I would be grateful if someone could clarify this. Thanx

correct, that's an over pressure valve and shouldn't leak fuel under normal conditions.
If it is leaking then it can be the cause of starting and/or cutting out issues as the pump then struggles to maintain/raise fuel rail pressure

Regards
Richard

Best question and answer to it in a long while and you more or less got it right.
But..Ah..em..wait....having the repair done...That's another story..
Will it be another injection pump required. What's the odds...
Good luck and stick to the answer.

Hows your car after changing the relief valve Graham...It certainly was a good quick thread under fuel rail pressure and starting.
