0w is far too thin. You will struggle to maintain oil pressure when hot and may notice oil leaks. 10w-40 is recommended and is what you should stick with.

I use Royal Purple 10w 40 fully synthetic.

My van has a Propane/LPG conversion (3.3 V6), and I do a lot of driving in hilly areas where the engine has to work harder, so because these fuels tend to run a hotter, I like to use an oil which is up to the task.

The Mobil 1 web site recommend the 0w-40 grade for my car. Doesn't seem to have any problems with it. Just looked at the owners book. It also suggests a 5w-40 grade to. I will email Mobil and ask the question.

Just had a chat with Tim @ Opie oils. He has said that a 0w -40 oil like mobil 1 is absolutely fine for the engine. I will still email Mobil as I like to know what there thinking is on the recommendation.

Advanced Fuel Economy oils do exist, they use them in the motor racing industry and cost perhaps £100 per litre. Certainly Mobil 1 at that price point is the usual marketing hype to catch the usual 'believers'. Using a W [means winter] of 0w [viscosity limits at 100°C] is exactly what we used to do many many years ago of course in this country it was then, and is now, essential to change the oil come Easter to protect the engine in a British summer, so whilst if your engine tolerances and gasket[ry] is good it will do your engine no harm in a UK winter, I would not want it in my engine in a UK summer. I use the makers recommended full synth because like tyres I have no intention of falling for the marketing hype and paying twice a year [every year - every year - every year] to change back.

As for the man at Opie why sells this stuff telling people that its the best thing since sliced bread - I rest my case .. .. in fact I'd sack him if he said anything else.

Grade................0°C................10°C...... ..............40°C...............100°C

0w-40...............665cst.............354cst........ ..........82cst...............14cst
5w-40...............842cst............ 430cst..................91cst................14cst
10w-40.............874cst.............440cst .................91cst................14cst
15w-40............1260cst.............595cst.......... ......107cst...............14cst

SAE is just an expression of oil grade range in centistokes[cSt]

I do understand what you are getting at here with the "Hype" around "Premium branded oils" and the cost of some expensive adverts to tell you it's the best thing since sliced bread. For me it was the fact that I managed to buy Mobil 1 for 15 quid a few years back! So it's a cost advantage for me to use it in the Van.

I have always looked at the spec's and the data sheets on the oils! That is why I use Asda own brand 5w40 in my 300bhp Celica gt4 205. And not the Mobil 1 as it is to thin for these Yamaha 3s-gte built engines. I also used Double ester oils (Motul 300V ) in other cars in the past as again I managed to buy it cheaper than the "Normal " stuff.

The other big reason for me using Mobil 1 is the very high TBN that is very good and will help protect the engine...
