Default power loss

more and more frequently my 95 sebring lxi loses power during acceleration and/or stutters at idle after warming up. a minute or so later the check engine light comes on and the car runs fine. i am baffled. i was told that in the 95 the check engine light only comes on for emmission problems and i have no idea what emmission devices would cause the engine to act this way... any suggestions? could it be an o2 sensor?
