There is a flexible ribbon connector that is wound like a clockspring that connects the electrics and airbag on the steering wheel to the body, The constant bending of it means they have a habit of cracking.
There was a recall on them, might be worth checking if yours has been done

You'll have to gain access to the clockspring connector or the radio and BCM connections to test wire continuity through the clockspring. In either case disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent the airbags from ruining your day.
